Live Review: Amateur Dance 'It's Really Something' EP

6 November 2015 | 6:01 pm | Emma Jones

Out now on October Records, Amateur Dance shows he's no amateur at all with his latest EP - a stunning four-track release titled 'It's Really Something'.

Whilst we predicted that AMATEUR DANCE would have a stellar year this year and named him one of our "Artists To Watch For 2015", we definitely weren't ready for just how great his latest release would be. Having dropped a four-track EP this week titled It's Really Something, this rising Melbourne producer shows what he's capable of in all his emotional house glory.

Focussing on creating an experience or a journey for the listener, instead of tailoring songs specifically for the dancefloor, Amateur Dance has distanced himself from the fray of generic producers and instead carves out his own space as a formidable force to be reckoned with. Seamlessly weaving his way through sparse but twinkling soundscapes, he leaves everything up for the listener's own imagination and further solidifies his reputation that he is absolutely one to keep an eye on.

Having made a name for himself on his remixes, the differences between old Amateur Dance and new Amateur Dance are stark, and one can't help but wonder if it's because of the fact he is working with his own, original material. Whilst his previous efforts have a special place in our hearts, the fact that he is sounding so accomplished, refined and meticulous on this EP stands to reason that he is at his best when he's doing himself.

From the pulsing, delicate title track that sits comfortably at just over 10 minutes without ever feeling too long, to the intriguingly named 'Sometimes You Are Trying To Find Yourself, And You Run Away Always', the soulful house sounds of 'Hot Since Just Before' and the atmospherical yet groovy 'If Reality Calls, Hang Up'; It's Really Something uses subtlety and precision to embed itself into your brain, and Amateur Dance's innate knack for house stylings to keep it there.

Out now on October Records, it looks like Amateur Dance is set to end this year on an almighty high, but has left us thinking - if this is what he is able to do now, what else has he got in store?
