Artists To Watch In 2015: Amateur Dance

25 December 2014 | 12:00 am | Hannah Galvin

We've loved everything that Melbourne producer, Amateur Dance, has delivered thus far. We can't wait to see what he brings to 2015.

A pursuit that may have only been born into the private life of Joseph Cookson, the musical talent of this 20-year old Melbourne producer has proven to be much more than of just amateur quality (which is a little ironic considering his stage name, AMATEUR DANCE).

The thing that we love so much about this solo artist is his ability to leave an emotional impact from only a few songs that don't really facilitate a whole lot of audible traffic. From his first single, 'What I Had 2 Do' to his second, recently released EP, Talking About Yourself, Cookson has committed to a very minimal sonic palette (with the odd self-deprecating lyric) to articulate his deep-house, chilled out voice.

To be able to latch onto the attention of so many with such limited magnitude is just as impressive as showcasing a variety of different talents, so it's no wonder that Amateur Dance is really starting to pick up in Australia's wild music scene.

Having been around for roughly a year now, Amateur Dance has not only started to build a trusty and reputable back-catalogue, he's already made a great impression on Australian radio and music publications, and even took part in Sydney's Electronic Music Conference. To top it all off though, this year saw the young artist sign to October Records, where he sits on a roster accompanied by The Kite String TangleLancelot and Frames & Elizabeth Rose.

Achieving so many goals already, Amateur Dance hasn't lost sight of his prospects, which makes us so very excited to watch him climb even higher come 2015.
