PS Approved: BIGSOUND 2019

4 September 2019 | 11:47 am | Caitlin Medcalf

This year's BIGSOUND conference is currently in full swing. It's the one week in the year where the Australian music industry comes together for a few days of performances, networking and making things happen.

Known for bringing together some of the best and brightest emerging acts in the country, this year's showcase features over 150 of the country's best right now. With so much going on, we thought it'd be helpful to put together a list of some of the acts we're stoked to see on the lineup. Check them out below.

CLOSE COUNTERS

Finn Rees & Allan McConnell AKA Melbourne duo CLOSE COUNTERS, have been on our radar for some time now. After delivering a smashing set at our 13th birthday party earlier in the year, they've since performed at Splendour In The Grass, delivered another new single, 'HEY!!!' and are now gearing up for the release of their forthcoming four-tracker, Refractions, set to be out via Exist Recordings soon.

Fast making a name for themselves as both dynamic and expertly skilled performers, Close Counters chemistry as musicians are ultimately what brings their sound to life and will be something to look forward to this BIGSOUND. The duo are set to be performing tonight at the Wooly Mammoth showcase alongside AphirLÂLKAupsidedownhead and Huntly.

FIRST BEIGE

Brisbane six-piece FIRST BEIGE have a synchronicity like no other. The band effortlessly mix sounds ranging from disco, soul and funk to create something centred around a certain pastiche, but is never bogged down by it. Their reimagining of these older type of sounds remains central to any of their works, more recently in 'Desire', a vocal-led, disco-delicious jam.

They've got a couple of shows at this year's BIGSOUND. Today, they'll be performing at the GRAIN's Matesound Party at The FoundryBaked Goods Trouble Juice's (Un)official showcase at Barbara and at The Brightside later in the night.

HEMM

Melbourne duo Juice Webster and Bobby Downie AKA HEMM create music that explores the intricacies of human connection. Through electronic music, the pair muse about lost relationships and honest feelings. What emerges is a sound that runs deeper than traditional electronic music. There's a philosophical element to their work that adds depth to the project. Their latest single, 'Think About It' captures this immensely.

You can catch them tonight at Heya Bar for their final BIGSOUND performance.

HUNTLY

Melbourne three-piece HUNTLY have been taking over the world in 2019 with their stunningly honest brand of 'doof you can cry to'. This year, they released their debut record, Low Grade Buzz which saw them work within the confines of RnB, pop, drum n bass and techno to create something that challenged convention and told stories that shift suddenly in perspective throughout.

Huntly will be performing tonight at the Wooly Mammoth showcase for the three-piece's only BIGSOUND showcase performance.

WOLFJAY

This year, WOLFJAY emerged. Though they've been creating music for a little bit, 2019 has seen the Melbourne artist realise much more than their personal sound. It's been a big year of personal growth for WOLFJAY, and their return wholly embodies that confidence. 'Together' came out a few weeks back, and is an ode to forgetting the troubles of the world and uniting through togetherness.

Catch WOLFJAY at BIGSOUND tomorrow night at The Flying Cock.
