Live Review: Everything You Need To Know About Shadow Sable

19 August 2015 | 2:43 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Shadow Sable (Sable's dark alter-ego) has been messing about with some dynamite tracks. We delve a bit deeper into what's on their SoundCloud.

You may or may not have heard that SABLE’s embarking on a new journey. He’s enlisted the help of some of his friends to create this huge social project that spans over Facebook, Soundcloud and I’m probably going to say the media too because that’s a huge part of how this is all getting out.

You can head on over to his Facebook page to check it all out and to follow it as it unfolds, but with the help of visual artist Pearl A Yang and a few friends at Pilerats, Sable’s using this project to basically give context to and to aid in releasing his music.

It’s a killer initiative, and one of the most innovative projects I would say that has occurred in dance music in a very long time.

Spoilers ahead (just getting ur back with this one <3):

The story begins with Sable holding up 5 USB’s; each holding masters of his tracks for his forthcoming EP. His lil friend Kuro is by his side as they then prepare to go to sleep.

Whilst asleep, they’re visited by the evil Shadow who steals these USB’s. As he leaves, Kuro chases him and he drops one. And we were graced with Sable’s first single in a while - ‘One and Only’.

The reason why this is bad however, is that because Shadow has the Dark Stereo. And once music is played through the Dark Stereo, it's lost forever, never to be heard from again.

I don’t want to spoil any more for you, but Shadow recently hacked Sable’s Facebook page and released a couple of tracks on a separate SoundCloud for what is now Shadow Sable.

This is where it gets interesting.

These tracks are nothing like anything we’ve heard from Sable before. In fitting nature with the theme, they’re dark, heavy and absolutely loud, something quite contrastive to the bubbly nature of Sable’s beats that we’re so used to. That's not to say that this is a bad thing, however.

‘Player 1’ came first, and features some pretty dark bouts of deep horns, a power-tool esque hook that has a real Frankenstein’s monster feels to it, but as usual, it’s still got that killer Sable vibe we all love.

The second track ‘Want It’, spins Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’ in a way that you’ve never heard it before. I don’t know what he’s been doing these past few months, but these tracks are absolute fire, and if the SoundCloud comments are any indication of people’s reactions to it, no one’s unhappy about it.

And finally, we’re given a slice of Shadow Sable’s Pokemon love with an apt ode to 'Team Rocket'. This one’s a bit faster, but that dark essence is still there. The synths are bassy, the bass is even more bassy and somehow, the little technical flourishes he throws in are bassy too. There’s little Pikachu samples floating around, which makes this one feel so classic Sable.

There’s no doubt in our minds that Sable’s a creative mastermind. This project is one of the most innovative we’ve had the pleasure of following for a while, and we’re only more keen to see how this one unfolds.
