Live Review: PRINTS_ 'Ghosts'

9 January 2015 | 2:24 pm | Emma Jones

Mysterious LA producer duo have released their third song in two years, Ghosts - an eerie slice of dream pop.

Mysterious LA producer prints_ duo are a strange pair. They released two tracks about two years ago, then nothing was heard from them again. The tracks, Cut and Wish got a few thousand plays on Soundcloud, but they seemed to have vanished soon after releasing them. Now, they've returned with the dark and murky haze of their new track, Ghosts.

You can't not compare prints_ to PURITY RING, but when you listen closer you can see the differences. There are crossovers to CRYSTAL CASTLES, as well as comparisons to our own WILLOW BEATS, and although they wear their influences on their sleeves, it's no denying prints_ are onto something seriously good here.

All three tracks are dark and eerie pieces of electro pop, with dreamy vocals and heavy production. Self described as "futurepop", Ghosts starts off with a beat and fuzzy synths, as the cymbals kick in with the echoing female vocals. It settles into a groove that is more danceable than you'd think for something that sounds so ominous. The delicate keys coming in around the 1 minute mark shed a bit of light to the otherwise hazy, murky soundscape.

A wall of fuzzy reverb descends throughout the song, rarely stopping which gives the track an almost formidable feel to it. The breakdown of light keys with the ever-present fuzz trickles into a delicate and unpredictably soft end for the track, and shows serious maturity and skill for the anonymous duo.

There is next to no information about prints_ apart from their SoundCloud, so we will just have to wait with baited breath until the next surprise release, whenever that will be!
