Live Review: PREMIERE: Fractures works his magic on Dan Croll's 'Tokyo'

9 November 2017 | 3:31 pm | Emma Jones

'Tokyo' is the final track on DAN CROLL's album, Emerging Adulthood, and is a triumphant closer to an album that grapples with a plethora of heavy issues. The album came after a few hard years for Croll, and is the end result of a tumultuous time in which he had to reckon with not only the outside world and the music industry, but his own demons as well.

It's a slice of indie pop heaven, with Croll's powerful voice paired with some exceptional guitars, some crisp keys and a hook that will be stuck in your head whether you like it or not. Now, in true Croll style of working outside his comfort zone, he's recruited artists from around the world to put their own spin on 'Tokyo', and is releasing each of these in a new EP.

Having tapped the likes of ANNA OF THE NORTHMercury-nominated C Duncan, and  composer and arranger Paul Frith (The XX, Radiohead) to remix 'Tokyo', Dan Croll also sent the track to our very own FRACTURES, and we've got the first listen right here.

Known for his innate skill when it comes to crafting electronica that makes you move, and feel, Fractures uses his trademark magic on 'Tokyo' to turn it into a swelling, blooming electronic dream. Dynamic and catchy, he keeps Croll's vocals intact, and instead dismantles the frame around them to build his own, including tense build ups of atmospherics, a fresh beat and light synths. This rework sounds like it could be taken out of the boom of late 00's Australian dance music a la early Cut Copy or Miami Horror, with it's indie influences still strong but a greater focus on the danceability of the tune.

Speaking of the new Tokyo EP, Croll said; "Tokyo is about the need and desire to travel to new places, so having all of these artists from all over come together on one EP is a great feeling. Each have brought their own feel to it, even the artwork brings a whole new feel to the track for me so I’m incredibly excited for people to get stuck in to it."

Along with the release of this EP, Dan Croll will also be kicking off his 'Dial Dan' hotline once more, with fans welcome to call, text or WhatsApp Dan directly on 07867 996606 to chat about anything and everything. Tokyo is out November 10th.
