Live Review: Francesca Gonzales and Cookie Cutters cross country and genres

1 February 2017 | 8:04 am | Abbey Lenton

'Lights Come On' not only crosses genres, it also crosses the country as Melbourne's' Francesca Gonzales teams up with Alice Spring's Cookie Cutters.

Melbourne vocalist FRANCESCA GONZALES has been coined as one to watch time and time again. Her silvery vocals and emotional lyricism proving a maturity from the artist who is only very new to the scene. Off the back of her Anywhere Boy EP, her latest release is 'Lights Come On', a collaboration with COOKIE CUTTERS.

'Lights Come On' not only crosses genres, it crosses the country as well. A pop production duo out of the Northern Territory, Cookie Cutters' dynamic sound is born out of the dusty landscapes of Alice Springs. But the track's dancey beats plant it straight into the nightlife of a city's club culture.

Francesca Gonzales' voice smoulders with depth. Beyond smokey, and even verging on guttural, she delivers uniqueness and soul. Backed by entrancing synths, 'Lights Come On' is undeviating in its power. "Till the lights come on at the club at the end of the night, I'm here. I'll be here," sings Gonzales. And you truly do believe her. A total groover, the throbbing beats never waiver.

Gonzales' voice is certainly the star of the show, but the instrumental is powerful in its own right. Shining especially towards the end of the song, the vocals draw to their close as an eruption of electro takes the reins. Cookie Cutters channel some of the world's most prominent producers to create a dance floor number that oozes skill and style.
