Live Review: NZCA Lines 'Persephone Dreams'

6 October 2015 | 12:09 pm | Tom Hutchins

'Persephone Dreams' is a major shift away from the sharp, beat heavy electronica NZCA Lines was crafting on his debut.

Before we jump into NZCA Lines' new single, here's a quick primer on the alias of Michael Lovett.

  • Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer from London
  • First emerged as a member of Your Twenties, the project Gabriel Stebbing (his brother) left Metronomy for.
  • Focussed on his solo project, NZCA Lines, after Your Twenties broke up
  • Released a killer debut LP in 2012
  • Was a touring member of Metronomy on their Love Letters World Tour
  • Released a single late last year
  • Released a new single, announced second album, and added two more members to the band today

Okay, now that you're up to speed - there's a new NZCA Lines single out, to coincide with the announcement of the band's new album. The track is called 'Persephone Dreams' and the album is titled Infinite Summer. The band also now features a permanent live section that includes current Hot Chip drummer Sarah Jones and former Ash guitarist/solo artist Charlotte Hatherley.

'Persephone Dreams' is a major shift away from the sharp, beat heavy electronica NZCA Lines was crafting on his debut - as the track is based more-so in synth heavy kraut-pop. Stripping back the massive bass and reverb heavy layers, the new single offers a more solid song structure, whilst still showcasing the smooth vocals of Lovett.

It sounds fuller and feels like it was made for a live setting. The bedroom has certainly been taken out of the 'bedroom producer' on this one. Check out the hazy, intergalactic sounds below.

Infinite Summer is out January 22 2016 via Memphis Industries/Shock.
