David Pimentel, aka POMO, has been bringing a new lease of life to Montreal’s music scene – here, fellow Canadian Kaytranada lends a helping hand on their funky and harmonious collaboration, ‘Cherry Funk’.

It opens with a space-age shuffle and disco drum beat that slinks in all groovy and delicious. Kaytranada’s touch is strong here, although Pomo’s nifty style brings an element of neo-soul to the track. This nifty style is largely informed by his classical piano training – there’s a deftness of touch that comes through on a Pomo produced track or remix.

The pair have worked together for a few years now. Pomo saw Kaytranada play back in 2013 (when his name was Kaytradamus) and was ‘blown away by his music’. Pomo put together his ‘So Fine’ demo and sent it to Kaytranada; the track was put into the producer’s mix for HW&W Recordings, who in turn asked Pomo to do a couple of records for their label.

The two producers play well off one another on ‘Cherry Funk’ – Kaytranada seems to be in charge of the drums (familiar whomping oomphing bass beats), whilst Pomo’s appreciation of and focus on chord progression and jazz styles come into play on the upper parts of the track.

‘Cherry Funk’ is taken from Pomo's debut EP "The Other Day", out now.
