Live Review: Yuma X 'Swimming Pool'

14 May 2015 | 1:00 pm | Emma Jones

Mysterious Sydney duo Yuma X deliver up one of the best covers of this year, with Ghoul's 'Swimming Pool'

They may have wanted to remain a little mysterious, but YUMA X have become anything but, with reactions to their debut single reaching fever pitch. Dropping a smooth, collected and gorgeous cover of Ghoul's 2008 track 'Swimming Pool', the Sydney girl-boy duo catapulted to #1 on the Hype Machine charts - and deservedly so.

Yuma X are Jake and Lucy from Sydney’s northern suburbs. This is the first song either of them have released. Soft and crisp like the wintery mornings we're going into, Yuma X have turned the seminal Ghoul track into a mellow, swelling and warm number that has a groove you can't escape, even if you wanted to. Taking a less-is-more approach, the results are hugely impressive, and self-explanatory as to why the hype surrounding them is so massive right now.

Lead singer Lucy and her perfect combination of enchantingly relaxed and raspy vocals glide over the laidback percussion and looped vocal samples, giving it that little extra depth that makes it so inviting.

There's no more substantiated information on the pair, but we've been told they are working on new songs which will be released in the next couple of months.
