Live Review: BUOY 'Don't Want To See You'

14 May 2015 | 12:00 pm | Emma Jones

One of the most exciting breakout stars of this year, BUOY returns with another stunning single 'Don't Want To See You', taken from her new EP 'Immersions'

BUOY burst onto the scene earlier this year with her stunning debut single, 'Took Me Up'. It was there we had our first real glimpse as the artist, with her beautiful vocals and stunning arrangements. Blending a variety of genres into something that doesn't quite fit anywhere, her sound is gentle but powerful, relaxed but hypnotic, and has stood the test of the follow up single with her new track, 'Don't Want To See You'.

Doing things just a little differently, creating a soundscape that can best be described as "controlled chaos", on first listen it sounds a bit disconcerting or uncomfortable, but you don't have to look much deeper to really hear what's going on.

Starting off with some scattered vocal samples and a few synth noises, the thudding beats and atmospheric synths come into play before some erratic other percussive sounds are added to the fray. The gorgeous vocals of BUOY soar over the layered arrangements she has created, before some bass with the ability to vibrate your skeleton thuds.

In what slowly becomes one big yet relaxed and spacious cacophony, the combination of each layer and BUOY's light and airy voice creates an almost playful atmosphere, even though the lyrics are actually anything but. It's this ability to be unsuspecting, unpredictable and totally her own that makes BUOY so special, and 'Don't Want To See You' is a testimony to her talent.

'Don't Want To See You' is taken from BUOY's debut EP, Immersion which is shaping up to be a real knock out. Get on board if you haven't already, I have a feeling we still haven't heard the best from her!
