Live Review: Spirit Faces ft. BUOY ‘Cloudplay’

12 February 2015 | 9:44 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Sydney bedroom producer Spirit Faces has teamed up with BUOY for the dreamy 'Cloudplay'.

SPIRIT FACES is the absolutely gorgeous new project of Pete Covington, a rather experimental bedroom genius from Sydney.

He produces music that is simple, yet eclectically complex. It evokes feeling, and more than anything, displays a sort of tension that can only really be achieved through a willingness to experiment beyond the scopes of traditional sound.

To me, his sound appears to be “electronic”, however I think it’s more than that. The sounds he uses are more guitar based and created sounds rather than sample-heavy music. His latest single features Sydney based songstress BUOY, who lends her lovely vocals for this dreamy number.

It’s conflicting from the start, and that’s what I love most about it. The dark, almost rock element created by the electric guitar bouts contrast with BUOY’s gorgeous, ethereal vocals. It sounds like stars and feels like a warm hug.

What stands out most for me however, is how different this track is. The bedroom artist has done extremely well in solidifying that ‘Cloudplay’ is a sound only he could create. And more than anything, it comes across as heartbreakingly authentic in the way that it evokes feeling.

SPIRIT FACES and BUOY are a musical match made within the stars, and ‘Cloudplay’ is the most gorgeous and original outcome that we could have hoped for.
