Live Review: SAMO SOUND BOY 'Begging Please'

28 April 2015 | 7:17 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

The Body High label master is back at it with his latest single 'Begging Please' Featuring some pretty nostalgic 80's and soul vibes, he's done it again.

I read a comment today that someone had made on the basis of 2015 being the year that 80’s music will be revived. So far, it’s definitely safe to say that this has been the case. Maybe not in the most overt ways, but definitely in subtle ones.

SAMO SOUND BOY is a producer doing big things. He’s consistently pushed boundaries to the point where his music is so distinguishable from the herd, and I think in 2015, this is what an artist needs to do.

His last single ‘What Can I Do’ feels similar yet so distant from his latest feature, ‘Begging Please’.

There’s this vibe he brings through the vocals that feel so soulful and this makes it feel as though it’s on the cusp of feeling very reminiscent. ‘Begging Please’ however, is formulaic and delves into some distinctly different eras of music to make up what essentially is this seven-minute amalgamation of nostalgia and forward thinking.

There’s definitely an 80’s vibe emanating from the synth he’s chosen. It’s deep and dark and this all hides away in the sustained nature of the notes.

SAMO SOUND BOY is definitely one of my favourite producers to come out of the last few years, and it’s so killer to still feel that his work is as diverse as ever. ‘Begging Please’ is a refreshing reminder of how diverse electronic music can be, and the boundaries that he’s consistently pushing are a real testament to him as an artist.
