Nicole Millar on ‘Sydney’s Top Shady Zones’

25 November 2014 | 12:08 pm | Hollie Cunningham

As part of our support for the Pretty Shady brand, Nicole Millar hits us with her top 5 Sydney hang outs for summer.

As huge advocates of Pretty Shady and their proactive mission to change our perceptions of sun protection, we have asked a number of our favourite artists to enlighten us with their top shady spots to hit this summer.

For this instalment we chatted to Sydney based singer/songwriter NICOLE MILLAR. Her dreamy vocals first caught everyone’s attention on Cosmo’s Midnight’s track ‘Phantasm’ which resulted in many more collaborations with the likes of Peking Duk, What So Not and Golden Features. Of course with such ethereal vocals and general aura, Nicole has very quickly gone on to flourish in her own solo career. Her first track ‘Taken' (produced by up-and-comer Xander James), has proved that we can expect big things.

Nicole tends to steer clear of Bondi’s sea of tinny-swilling baking bodies, preferring to spend her time away from the crowds on Sydney’s hidden beaches (under the shade of some beautiful natives), or enjoying a cider or two under a sun umbrella at her favourite bar ‘Bucket list’.

1. Bucket List Bondi

"My friends and I have been going there a lot lately. We always share a jug of cider and chill outside by the beach. Make sure to order food as well, I always forget and get food envy of others."

2. Bay Lane/Darook Park Beach

"I live in The Sutherland Shire so my local beach is Cronulla. I like to go to a little hidden beach that is great for chilling out. I don’t really like waves and crowded beaches, so this is perfect."

3. Moonlight Cinemas Centennial Park

"These cinemas only happen during the summer in Centennial Park. The best way to enjoy it is by hiring a beanbag and chilling out with a Magnum."

4. Royal National Park

"There are so many hidden secrets in The National Park. I like to make a day of it and go with friends and find secret beaches and waterfalls. Wattamolla beach is one of my favourites because you can do almost do anything there; this includes jumping off cliffs into the water, which I haven’t done yet as I’m super scared of heights."

5. Messina

"I love eating ice cream probably a bit too much. I’m pretty sure everyone has heard about Messina by now. The best way to go about it is to pick something from the specials board as they normally make those ones as one-off flavours."
