Live Review: Owen Pallett 'Song For Five & Six' Remix EP + Documentary

25 June 2014 | 11:21 am | Hannah Galvin

Owen Pallett has released a remix EP to his single, 'Song For Five & Six' ft. Ada, DJ Rashad and The Cyclist; as well as a short doco for his new album.

Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer OWEN PALLETT released his fourth studio album 'In Conflict' in late May of this year. Gaining a fair workout from his international audience, one of the LP's tracks, 'Song For Five & Six' has returned to the artist in three completely transformed versions.

From the modest, down-tempo kaleidoscope that was Germany's ADA, late Footwork pioneer DJ RASHAD and THE CYCLIST (moniker of Andrew Morrison) have all dirtied up Pallett's 'Song For Five & Six' by integrating their own style to the original mix.

Roughing up the edges sees Michaela Dippel - known to her audience as just Ada - take on the track's first refurbishment. Following the original album version in the remix EP's track-list, the juxtaposition could not be more apparent.

Embracing a theme that sounds as though we're on a dangerous quest in a dodgy neighbourhood, it's almost as though were burrowed right inside the Windows '95 Maze Screensaver; as the audacity of the tune is as frustrating as it is compelling, as we aimlessly chase the safety zone.

DJ Rashad's interpretation of Owen Pallett's 'Song For Five & Six' was delivered with the helping hand of DJ Spinn, and is the only track featured that focuses entirely on the instrumentation's solidarity. With the lack of lyrics aiding the minimalist nature of the mix, the simplicity of DJ Rashad's execution elegantly displays a sped up tempo with some of his own samples, ultimately allowing the listener a complete and personalised remix.

Sitting in the fourth and final corner of the EP is occupied by The Cyclist as he works his magic on 'Song For Five & Six'. Eliminating the soft key-line that dances its way through the original, we now adapt to the environment festooned with rigid synth-work, reverberation and a dash of dub overlay. Congregating these elements has seen the entire piece plunge into the sonic realm in a way quite different to the initial version found on In Conflict.

To conicide with the 'Song Of Five & Six' remix EP release, the Creators Project have presented us with a documentary that focuses on the composing and performance of Owen Pallett's most recent record, In Conflict. Enlightening us on his reasoning behind looping live instruments during a show, the assembly of his live band and touching on the analogue recording process for his fourth LP, Owen Pallett both demonstrates and tells us of his current artistry methods.

Although the remix EP is yet to be available to Australian residents, you can grab Owen Pallett's track, 'Song For Five & Six' HERE, otherwise the entire LP, In Conflict, can be purchased HERE thanks to Domino Records.
