REVIEW: Bleeding Knees Club Bigsound Showcase @ Electric Playground, Brisbane

13 September 2013 | 3:25 pm | Lauren Payne

Bleeding Knees Club play one of their final shows of 2013 at Brisbane's Bigsound Live, with a few crazy things going on.

BLEEDING KNEES CLUB. That crazy garage punk sound that Alex Wall and Jordan Malane started off with when the band initially became a thing has most definitely evolved, but the general aesthetic of the now trio has remained the same.

If you're not too sure what that is just yet, it's mainly that these two guys from the laid-back Gold Coast suburb of Burleigh heads, really just don't give a shit about what people think. Jordan Malane is definitely the more relaxed of the two and you can see that in their live performances as he tends to move smoothly as he plays his bass. Alex Wall however is like a fire cracker, you can't pin this boy down and honestly, it's his energy that makes BLEEDING KNEES CLUB gigs so exciting.

It seems with Wall that showmanship, or just general stage presence, comes naturally. You barely see the guy stand still and being the lead singer of the band, it's kind of his job to be energetic. His wit and attitude definitely steal the show though, and that's exactly what happened at BLEEDING KNEES CLUB's Bigsound Showcase. When Wall's guitar starts to play up, he begins to talk to the audience whilst he tunes up again.

With Wall's wild remarks, you're reminded of why BLEEDING KNEES CLUB are so appealing to people. Not only is their music bringing back a certain nineties nostalgia that most of us have either forgotten, or weren't old enough to take in yet, Wall and Malane also just have an attitude that pretty much explains to the world that they aren't going to change.

It's refreshing really. People are dancing down in the mosh pit along to the band's older tracks like 'Bad Guys', 'Camp Out' and 'Have Fun' but the party really gets started when BLEEDING KNEES CLUB begin to play their biggest hit to date, 'Feel'.

Yep, the crowd surfing begins at the end of the set as Wall propelled himself over the crowd. This is again pretty standard, but what was rad was that Alex was carried from one side of the venue to the other without hitting the ground once! It was a great end to the set and really wrapped up the whole show. So Bigsound probably wasn't ready for the full force of a BLEEDING KNEES CLUB show, but the audience was.

They loved it, they thrived on it, but now we are reminded that only a few shows remain before Alex Wall and Jordan Malane go their separate ways for a time. Alex is moving to America, and Jordan is staying in Australia keeping himself busy.

The attitude of a BLEEDING KNEES CLUB gig will be missed, but fingers crossed the hiatus won't last for too long.
