Live Review: Haiku Hands keep on skyrocketing with 'Jupiter'

18 April 2018 | 3:28 pm | Jackson Langford

It's a long way down, but Haiku Hands and 'Jupiter' prove that this band will not stop until they've reached the highest of heights.

When HAIKU HANDS dropped their raucous - in the best way possible - 'Not About You' last year, the country simply was not prepared for the eruption of fun that was about to swamp them. It was a three-and-a-half minute banger that didn't compromise on volume, organised chaos and the ability to almost hypnotise you into partying harder than ever before. Now, with a new single finally out in the world named 'Jupiter', Haiku Hands shows a more subdued side to them that has elevated them to another level.

With an incredibly funky melody and a steady yet thumping beat, 'Jupiter' truly sees Haiku Hands dial things back for us. While 'Not About You' was a non-stop, breathless party, 'Jupiter' gives us room to breathe. It bounces softly from side-to-side and presents a calmer side of the band, but their assertion of self-worth and self-confidence remains ever present. "We're taking off/At hyperspeed/Can't hold us back," they mutter in the pre-chorus, before the Jayteehazard and El Gusto-aided production stomps in. It's a guitar line that is nostalgic as it is fresh that completely takes the band to new heights as it pierces the thick bed of production with its crisp chords.

It's a long way down, but Haiku Hands and 'Jupiter' prove that this band will not stop until they've reached the highest of heights. They've injected their catalogue with a serious dosage of funk, and have also proven that they know just when to strip it back. Their use of production that speaks for itself coupled with their lyrics that remain as self-assured as ever means that, whether you like it or not, this band is here to stay.
