Live Review: Mark Harding turns a fresh new leaf with ‘Thorn In Your Side’

23 May 2017 | 8:15 am | Freya Dinesen

Sydney songwriter and producer Mark Harding has released his newest single, ‘Thorn In Your Side’, following on from his debut last year.

This is the second release we’ve seen from Harding, following from his debut ‘Say It Too’ in November, which received awesome public reception.

This latest track proves to be a lot more electronically driven than ‘Say It Too’, which fused a range of organic timbres and resonated more faithfully to his multi-instrumental work with indie band Little May.

‘Thorn In Your Side’ seamlessly blends acoustic and electronic sounds as wavering, oriental influenced synth tones overlay the piano and a multitude of other organic instrument parts. These are driven by the use of both real percussion and automated beats, supporting the amalgamation of the wide array of instruments and sounds used in the composition.

Mark’s vocals initially present themselves as bold and assertive, showcasing the rich tonality of his voice. Added layering of vocal harmonies and effects create innate substance, holding the vocal parts together and further assimilating the other elements of the track.

‘Thorn In Your Side’ will be featured on Mark Harding’s debut EP, which is planned for release later this year. Given the massive variance in sonic palate that has so far been showcased with Harding’s two singles, we are definitely keen to see what his future releases will hold!
