Live Review: Wishes combines sign language and synths in clip for new single 'Settle'

2 November 2016 | 8:30 am | Ted Dwyer

Australia has its own sign language dialect, and it's the focus of the unique new clip from Wishes for his new synth-heavy track 'Settle'.

Wishes is back with his second single, ‘Settle.’ Jam packed with quirky synths and infectious production, the new tune is also accompanied by a unique clip directed by Josh Harris.

The Sydney multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer, real name John Towey, flexes his considerable pop muscles on this track, which follows his debut hit, ‘I Want To Be Alone With You.’ Think bouncy, euphoric synth work coupled with lightly distorted vocals that’ll lift your mood in seconds.

But it’s the clip for ‘Settle’ that’ll really pique your interest. Directed, shot and cut by Josh Harris, who has worked previously with Gang of Youths and Dustin Tebbutt, it mixes the moves of a cast of colourful characters with Auslan, the Australian sign language dialect.

“Auslan is it’s own distinctive language,” says Harris, who teamed up with Auslan Stage Left to translate the song’s lyrics to sign language. “The structure of sentences and grammar is quite different to English, which provided an interesting parallel, given that the song itself references the idea of miscommunication.”

Straight out of left field and expertly executed, the shot selection and retro aesthetic of the clip for ‘Settle’ matches perfectly with Towey’s pop sensibilities.

Good luck getting this one out of your head.
