Normally we would do a little introduction here for an article like this, but the legends in One Day have done the hard work for us. Celebrating the return of ONE DAY SUNDAYS to Brisbane, the guys put together a top five on the city they love.

We’re lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time travelling around this great nation throwing parties, playing shows, sampling local produce; and for as long as we’ve been touring, Brisbane has been a favourite.

Ahead of our triumphant return to Brissy with a massive free day party at Ric’s Backyard on Sunday, we took the time to note down our top 5 reasons why Brisbane is the Southern Hemisphere’s Prague.

No, Brisbane isn’t awash with German sex tourists nor a hotspot for Baroque architecture, but it is a bustling, cosmopolitan city that knows how to really turn one on, much like it’s Eastern European counterpart.

It’s no secret: Brisbane loves to party. This reason that Brisbane was the first city outside of our hometown of Sydney we took our One Day Sundays party. With an abundance of thriving bars and nightclubs (not to mention the unfortunate decline of Sydney’s King Cross), Fortitude Valley is arguably Australia’s premiere red light district.

Everyone is super friendly, even if we sometimes have trouble understanding what they’re saying

There’s nowhere else in Australia quite like Queensland, which is one of the state’s biggest drawcards. Queenslanders are a unique bunch, with their own distinct slang and style. Brisbane is at once fiercely proud and welcoming to outsiders, and, believe it or not, after enough XXX-golds, the QLD drawl can start sounding very familiar to Czech.

Much has been written about the dire situation in our hometown of Sydney regarding lock-outs and late night entertainment, there’s no need to rehash it. Suffice to say, it’s always a welcome change coming to Brisbane and being able to frequent various nightspots until the early hours of the morning.

The lack of culturally regressive and economically destructive lock-out laws is another parallel with Prague. Anastasia, if you can, please don’t fuck this up!

The Vltava-esque "Brown snake" is the life source of the economy

Brisbane’s cultural and financial epicentre is, of course, the Brown Snake, occasionally referred to officially as the Brisbane River. Much like the Vltava in Prague, which runs through the city, the Snake is a source of immense pride and folklore for Brisbane locals, providing transport (City Cat) and a thriving tidal pulse which can be felt all across the city.

Both cities are Rugby League crazy!

Queenslanders make no secret of the fact that their state has been the dominating force in Rugby League for several decades. A lesser known fact is that Prague is also a league-crazed town, yet another parallel between these two great cities.  In fact, Czech tennis star Martina Navratilova, a self-confessed "league tragic", ran Rugby League workshops in Prague with the help of Josh Hannay and Steve Renouf in 2014 in a bid to build another Northern Hemispherical home for the game.

Brisbane One Day fans can catch them this Sunday November 20th at Ric's.
