Live Review: Dream Koala 'Earth'

9 May 2014 | 6:08 pm | Lauren Payne

Dream Koala has a talent for creating music that make us sit down and think about the ways of the world, so on 'Earth' you should definitely expect to do just that.

DREAM KOALA has been busy recording a new collection of tracks and after releasing 'Saturn Boy' we have another new track from young Yndi Ferreira called 'Earth'.

After hearing the song's title you my think that there's a sort of spacey connection between the two new tracks and you're not wrong. Both track are not only named after planets, but also have a very mysterious atmosphere of their own that DREAM KOALA may or may not have created in relation to the mysteries of space.

Although 'Saturn Boy' sounds more like a song of deep thought, 'Earth' instead highlights the world we live in, in a very dark manner. With the lyrics "no one can save us, from ourselves," gliding through the track, the producer paints a picture of a world in turmoil. With the caption on DREAM KOALA's SoundCloud reading "The earth is not a cold dead place" you have an idea of what 'Earth' is going to tell you, but nothing can really prepare you for it. The track is sombre and like 'Saturn Boy', seems as if it's deep in thought and it's definitely something that will make you crawl into your own mind for a while.

The soothing synths and sweet falsettos make this a succulent track with some very deep ideas. After brooding for a while on the low synths hovering underneath Ferreira's vocals, we have a very quick build into a brighter array of hollow percussion, scattered synths that sound bright as anything and after the climax we have just Ferreira's vocals picking up the pieces of the explosion of sound he just created.

'Earth' paints a very vivid picture of a calm place before its destroyed in a matter of seconds. Relating directly to the EP's morbid title, 'Earth' is a track that takes you to a place where you kind of get lost amongst the sound and lyrics that just make you think a lot more. This is DREAM KOALA's talent, he creates music that hangs in your mind because the vocals and melody work together to pose questions about everything around us. Now that is a skill. The Earth. Home. Destroyed EP is out now through DREAM KOALA's Bandcamp and iTunes so grab it and get lost in its magnificence.
