Live Review: FEATURE ARTIST: Holland

30 July 2012 | 1:30 pm | Jessica McCabe

Holland are that kind of band that leave your ears yearning for another of their magical, melodious explosions long after the lights go out.

HOLLAND are one of those bands that leave your ears yearning for another one of their magical, melodious explosions long after the lights go out. So just a warning for anyone following their tour dates, these four Brisbane boys can holistically sedate you with ambience as soon as their set begins.

When Sony Music's executives heard their stuff they signed the band to a recording contract and later, a management arrangement fell into place with Billy Blue Music and things began to snowball. Previously known as Fatis Valour, Holland is led by Jarryd Klapper the multi-instrumentalist / songwriter who brings raw honesty and emotional intensity to the songs, whilst being complimented by lead guitarist Shane Grahmam’s reverberant licks.

Without their rhythm section, James Taylor (bass) and Javed Sterritt (drums) their unique compilation would not be complete. Together they create an alternative, easy-going, acoustic melody that is so foot-tapping your mum, friends and even that token weird guy at the last festival you went to will all enjoy it!

If a comparison must be made you could group them with artists such as Band of the Horses, Kings of Leon and Elbow. Front and center of the 4-piece band you’ll find Jarryd, with his hypnotizing tone and heartfelt lyrics he simply magnetizes fans towards him.

Their lead single “No Control” abounds in truth and tenderness, followed by other album highlights “What You Mean To Me” and the bass-heavy “Without You” that showcase the fine-tuned, personal skills of each musician.

In a nutshell Shane is known for his distinct stage presence, ask anyone who has seen a live performance. Every show it’s like the music teleports him to this euphoric world filled with everything he has ever loved, and he’s so ecstatic to be there and infused with vitality that he literally starts making love to his guitar! It’s inspiringly cool.

The audience tends to jump on Shane’s bandwagon as soon as Jarryd opens his mouth! It’s really hard not to be sucked in when he has the voice of a scruffy-haired angel. Their unparalleled, in sync sound also carries a very mainstream vibe. Keep an eye out for their tour dates and come along to appreciate their perfectly sequenced melodies.
