The Wiggles just covered Tame Impala for Like A Version
In an event that has every Australian millenial kicking off their Friday in the best way possible, The Wiggles jumped on triple j‘s Like A Version this morning and covered Tame Impala. We’re not sure anyone had that on their 2021 bingo cards but we’re thrilled it exists nonetheless!
Ripping into a slightly altered version of Tame Impala‘s monster hit ‘Elephant’, the children’s band were joined by legacy members Murray Cook and Jeff Fatt, on lead guitar and keys respectively. Current members Emma Watkins (drums), Simon Price (deeeeep vocals), Anthony Field (wearing an elephant hat) and Lachlan Gillespie (lead vocals and a god damn keytar) were all also present, and tore through the cover as well as original track ‘We Are All Fruit Salad’.
In a behind the scenes interview, Cook said Field called him up after the band were offered the opportunity to perform, and despite only making it to one rehearsal, he felt he did “alright.”
“I haven’t been playing with these guys for a long time,” he continued. “Just to have the old and the new together has been really fun.”
As for the reason behind the choice, “The Wiggles love animals and so we chose it because we love elephants,” Emma Wiggle said. She also went on to explain the surprisingly complexity of the song, even revealing she had a page of notes on the top drum to follow during the performance. Emma and Murray also spoke about the growth of the group, which celebrates its 30 year anniversary this year (which this writer is refusing to acknowledge having grown up with the band). Paying tribute to Greg Page and the originals of the band’s first iteration as well as expressing his love for the new versions of songs and the new line up, Cook seemed genuinely stoked to be involved with Watkins reciprocating that with genuine respect for the Wiggles elder.
