100 gecs just released a Christmas song so move over Mariah Carey
After tweeting a thinly veiled hint that a Christmas song might be on the way, 100 gecs (Dylan Brady and Laura Les) have well and truly saved the holiday season with the release of ‘sympathy 4 the grinch’. Channeling ska influences a la ‘stupid horse’, it’s fittingly bonkers, high energy and exactly what we need right now. Telling a tale about being good and still not getting the presents they wanted, the song is so on brand for 100 gecs who would absolutely feel sympathy for The Grinch.
The new single comes at the end of the duo’s most successful year yet as they made a name for themselves as one of 2020’s most exciting breakout names. They released 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues, a sort of-remix album which featured a star-studded tracklist of new iterations of their groundbreaking 2019 album, 1000 gecs. In our interview with both Dylan and Laura, Laura discussed why she thought people have such strong reactions to their music, saying, “I think we just tried to throw the rule book out as much as we could and just make something that we thought was really cool, and the fact that it resonated with people is amazing. Maybe it’s just that we have tastes that are underrepresented in the music that people make sometimes.”
