Live Review: Lastlings release new single 'Out Of Touch' in anticipation for their debut album

29 October 2020 | 3:28 pm | Claudia Fallon

Lastlings are unstoppable with the wildly vivid and transcendent soundscapes they explore in their new track 'Out Of Touch'.

Effortlessly creating euphoric electronica that dances around the fringes of ambient music, Lastlings are unstoppable with their wildly vivid and transcendent soundscapes. Hitting the scene in 2015 and climbing to new heights ever since, this Australian-Japanese sibling duo have released a new single 'Out Of Touch' following the announcement of their anticipated debut album First Contact. Working alongside the likes of Australian juggernauts RÜFÜS DU SOL and Cassian for their album, the enigmatic pair have shared a taste of what's to come, setting the bar high with their new elusive single.

Successfully painting vivid images in the mind of the listener, Lastlings have created yet another hypnotic and atmospheric track with hyper-charged sounds. As the latest single off their new album, 'Out Of Touch' echoes an ominous and brooding feeling with aspects of dark pop creeping through this multi-layered production. Always providing a tech-heavy touch with pulsating synths, the track becomes something exhilarating with electronically driven melodies and reverberating bass. With the addition of guitar elements amidst their classic otherworldly sound, 'Out Of Touch' presents itself as a quintessential Lastlings track. As their smooth electronica progresses from swirling, airy, and gentle melodies to rougher gradients with heavy synths, 'Out Of Touch' becomes an exploration of light and dark. Bound together with gentle yet expansive vocals, the single uses emotive lyricism to explore the importance of self-care during these "unprecedented times".

Talking about the inspiration behind their track Lastlings said, “The majority of the lyrics for Out of Touch were written at our grandparents' home in Japan. The song is about disconnecting from real life and spending time on yourself, especially at times where life becomes too much and you need to recharge. Self-care is so important, especially at times like this."

“The song is a bit of a full-circle moment because the main guitar parts were written with Josh’s first guitar. The guitar melodies were inspired by ‘path of the wind’ by Joe Hisaishi from our favourite childhood animation ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. All of these things together make the song extremely nostalgic for us because it reminds us of when we were kids and simpler times.”

As the release of 'Out Of Touch' heralds in a new venture for Lastings with the upcoming release of First Contact on November 20, this dynamic duo is remaining creative with their music-making. First Contact will centralise around "firsts" with each track venturing through yesteryear and exploring notable life milestones, providing deep reflection on early life, first experiences, love, and much more. The new album is preceded by a trailer that was co-created by Lastlings and Sydney-based director Dylan Duclos, paying homage the duo’s Japanese heritage. The video presents itself as dystopic, dark and beautiful with cinematography and imagery showing Lastlings amidst Japanese landscapes. And with this bold new track hinting at what's to come, this talented duo is continuing to prove themselves as one of Australia's finest electronic acts.
