For fans of Tame Impala or MGMT, AKA Lui is making his presence known in 2020 with a shimmering new single titled 'Pushing Me Aside'. A kaleidoscopic swirl of pop, funk, disco and a dash of psychedelic, his music is a unique fusion of soulful melodies, deep grooves, and infectious beats. In what he describes as "op-shop pop", AKA Lui carves out an impressive presence with 'Pushing Me Aside', creating something at once familiar and entirely brand new.
AKA Lui said of the single, "Pushing Me Aside is lyrically very direct. Writing the song was my way of coming to terms with what was going on around me. It’s like therapy, music is powerful like that. I like to think people can relate to this song in their own way based on whatever may be happening in their life. There really isn’t any "light at the end of the tunnel" moment on this record, I'm simply recounting a moment in time."
First arriving on the scene in style with his debut single "Hey! I Don’t Want That Anyway" in 2019, AKA Lui received deserved praise from around the world, amassing over 1 million streams and nabbing a re-release from iconic label, Kitsunè. Now, with 'Pushing Me Aside', he kicks off the start of a string of forthcoming singles set to delve into the various aspects and narratives of a break-up. Tell us more about your new single, ‘Pushing Me Aside’’?
You know when the vibe takes a turn... maybe you feel like a shadow in a room full of people, maybe your lover is totally ignoring you, maybe you're just overthinking it. There's that withdrawal where you lose your place in the world for a moment. I love how the production contrasts the lyrics. The song reminds me of a cloud.
What can we expect from you in the months ahead?
I've got some dope content coming out to support 'Pushing Me Aside' that you'll be seeing soon, plus I'm working on some new tunes that i'm very excited about, including some spicy collaborations with some international friends, I can't wait.
