Live Review: Magugu and Famous Eno take no prisoners on new track ‘Big Don’

Nigerian born, UK based MC Magugu and Irish producer Famous Eno combine forces to debut on NLV Records with ‘Big Don’.

Nina Las Vegas’ NLV Records continues its hot streak of assured, forward-thinking club music, with Nigerian born, UK based MC Magugu and Irish producer Famous Eno combining forces to debut on the label with ‘Big Don’, a heavy hitting bass track pushing pidgin rap to the fore.

The two artists started working on 'Big Don' in 2019, after Famous Eno remixed DJ Mellow and Magugu’s single 'Run Dem'. Famous Eno's initial beat for 'Big Don' gave the MC "the vibe [he] needed, and the rest just came naturally". Big room horns and a thumping hook draw on the best parts of bilingual colloquialisms, and exude confidence from both artists.

Raised in the birthplace of pidgin rap (Ajegungle, Lagos), ‘Big Don’ sees Magugu connect the world to his African heritage through a fast-paced, high energy blend of two disparate languages, which has seen previous support from the likes of Giles Peterson, Toddla T and Skrillex. This raucous energy is symbiotically enhanced by Famous Eno’s hefty soundscapes, building upon the producer's already existing exploration of Afro-Caribbean sounds deriving from UK dance and US club that have seen him work with major artists including the Fractal Fantasy crew and fellow NLV Records superstar UNIIQU3.

‘Big Don’ has already been added to rotation on Rinse FM, received praise on BBC Radio 1, and featured in Swing Ting’s Mixmag In Session mix - and if this early success and slamming track is anything to go by, both Magugu and Famous Eno are two artists we'd like to see more collaboration from.
