GENES delivers more pop perfection on new single, ‘Better’
North Queensland-via-Melbourne artist GENES is now three for three when it comes to stellar pop singles, but her latest effort has us absolutely reeling. Titled ‘Better’, we can confidently say this is one of the best songs we’ve heard this year. This time linking up with HAMLEY and Ninajirachi for co-production, she has completely leveled up with this release, unleashing a certified, undeniable bop for us all to enjoy.
All about the glow up that comes from the aftermath of a break up, GENES channels her idol, Carly Rae Jepsen on ‘Better’. After detailing the not-as-fun experiences of going through the end of a relationship in her introduction, ‘Give It Away’, and telling a tale of flirting with desire on second single, ‘When I’m Around You’, this latest release sees GENES unashamedly lean into just how good it feels to finally be out the other side.
Interestingly, GENES created the skeleton of this effervescent new release when she was feeling the complete opposite of what she is singing about. “When I wrote ‘Better’ I was in the thick of a break up and thought the bad feels would never end,” she said.
“I wrote this to snap myself out of it — I knew I would get better, I just had to keep singing it over and over again to remind myself. And now I am BETTER and I am really LIVING this song in the present. Happiness looks and sounds good on me.”
Given the headspace she was in at the time of writing the song, ‘Better’ is a testament to how formidable GENES is a songwriter. She’s already forged quite an impressive path writing for the likes of Young Franco and Sam Bluer, and with this latest project she enters her own, well-deserving spotlight. From forward-thinking production, lush atmospherics and unbeatable songwriting, ‘Better’ is the dose of serotonin that keeps on giving, and is setting GENES up to be a serious force to watch. Get on board now before there’s no room left!
