Soju Gang and Swerv team up for Indigenous fundraiser livestream

5 June 2020 | 11:44 am | Emma Jones

Soju Gang and Swerv have tapped a bunch of Melbourne DJs for a fundraising livestream this weekend.

Melbourne DJs are joining forces for a very special livestream, set up to raise funds for grassroots Indigenous causes after protests erupted in the US in light of the death of George Floyd. Solidarity protests in Australia are planned for this weekend as well to call for the end to systemic racism and police brutality here as well.

Named 'Spinning In Solidarity', the livestream will see ten DJs jump on their respective socially-distant decks this weekend with organisers Soju Gang and Swerv set to be joined by DJ PGZ, Jade Zoe, Koda, Jay Dean, Stevzar, Karia, JPS and Isaiah Morris.

In a post on Instagram, Soju Gang wrote, "As a form of solidarity some dj friends from Melbournes music scene will be putting on a live twitch event to raise funds to support the Indigenous community impacted by the violence of police and the justice system it serves."

"As we watch from afar the continued killing of the black community in the US, we mourn and seek justice for lives taken at the hands of those sworn to serve and protect. Yet at the same time a dark reality is revealed, this is not an American issue - we do not sit on a higher moral ground as a country. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait community face the same violence - and for too long we have ignored them. Their deaths go unnoticed and their fight for justice is swept aside."

"It’s time we stand up for our blak community here at home."

With a fundraising goal of $20,000, Spinning In Solidarity has advised their chosen funds include the GoFundMe pages for Joyce Carter, David Dungay Jr and Tanya Day, as well as Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance. A GoFundMe for the event has been set up to make donating as easy as possible, and funds will be transparently distributed evenly after the event.

The livestream will go live on Twitch from 2:30PM this coming Monday, June 8th. Check the full Instagram post below:
