Live Review: Mildlife share new 'Rare Air' video + two Apiento remixes

29 June 2020 | 2:02 pm | Emma Jones

Space-jazz magicians Mildlife have a whole stack of goodies with not only a new video but two special remixes to accompany their latest single, 'Rare Air'.

Fresh from announcing their forthcoming new album due out in September, space-jazz extraordinaires MILDLIFE have a whole stack of new goodness to share. Not only have they gifted us some stunning visuals for their latest single, 'Rare Air', they've also shared two brilliant remixes care of London-based producer and DJ Apiento.

Born out of mutual respect for each other's work, Apiento has put together a special remix and dub edit of 'Rare Air'. Having made a name for himself by running the Test Pressing blog as well as having made beats with M.I.A alongside Dave Taylor as YES Productions, co-running the International Feel label, now running the Husten and Test Pressing labels, and making music both solo under the Apiento moniker and alongside Andrew Hale as Open SpaceApiento's co-sign is a seriously impressive step up for the Melbourne band.

Further amplifying the utter magic of their latest single, the video clip for 'Rare Air' is also fittingly magical. Filmed at the Dunmoochin Foundation, the setting is a breathtaking plot of land an hour outside of Melbourne. The foundation's aim is to nurture emerging and established artists and researchers, and holds a special, personal meaning for the band.

According to a press statement, the foundation has been part of Mildlife’s bass player Tom Shanahan’s family for decades. He explained, “In the 50's Clifton Pugh (Australian artist and three-time winner of Australia's Archibald Prize) purchased 15 acres of land in Cottlesbridge which he named 'Dunmoochin'. Other artists then then came from the city to live and work on the site. One of these was my grandmother, Alma Shanahan who was a potter and sculptor. Her and Cliff were an item for a brief period there."

'Rare Air' is out now and is taken from Mildlife's forthcoming album, Automatic, out September 18 via Inertia Music. Pre-save/pre-order here.
