Live Review: Music To Isolate To: Stellie

23 April 2020 | 3:56 pm | Emma Jones

The next artist in our Music To Isolate To artist curated playlist series is the incredibly lush and magical rising star, Stellie.

With the ongoing and ever-evolving COVID-19 pandemic, it’s a crazy world out there right now, so it’s never been more important to band together. Self-isolation and social distancing are two of the most effective tools we have as a society to help fight COVID-19, but they’re also very difficult to undertake and they have very real, long-lasting consequences on the music and arts industries — some of which we aren’t even aware of yet. Our artists and our industry are already feeling the ripple effect, and things are only going to get worse before they get better.

Because of this, it’s up to us to use what we’ve got at our disposal to best represent and amplify our community and continue to tell artists’ stories. Purple Sneakers has always fiercely represented Australian music and our team are some of the best writers in the country, so we’re going to use our platform to continue doing what we do best: connect our community with the artists we love, and support artists by promoting their incredible music.

Music To Isolate To is an ongoing artist-curated playlist series by Purple Sneakers. We’ve asked some of our favourite artists ever to provide us with the ten songs they’re listening to while in isolation, and provide some commentary for their selections. We’ll be running these for the foreseeable future every Monday and Thursday, and you can follow the Spotify playlist which will be updated on these days right HERE. The idea is to not only promote artists who are curating the playlists, but to also promote those songs that mean a lot to them whether they be longtime classics or fresh new releases.

The next artist in our Music To Isolate To series is STELLIE. When she released her most recent single, 'How Do We Look So Good?', earlier this year, we said at the time Stellie was "responsible for some of the lushest songs we’ve heard in recent times," and that she was "on a one-way ticket to the top at the moment," and we stand by it. Beautiful and romantic in nature, Stellie's music is so lush it'll have you whisked away to another world completely. She's already accrued a hefty list of achievements in the short amount of time she's been about including supporting the likes of Winston SurfshirtLime Cordiale and more as well as being one of the most hyped acts to showcase at BIGSOUND, and with her latest single it really feels like she's turned a corner and stepped more into her own than ever before. Bound for big things, we can't get enough of Stellie!

From Ball Park Music and Meg Mac to Amy Winehouse and Crowded House, these are Stellie's selections to get not only herself through self-isolation and social distancing, but you as well. Take a look at her selections below.

ALL I WANT IS YOU - BALL PARK MUSIC

This song never fails to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. No matter how bad your day has been - there’s always that special someone that makes all the bad stuff melt away.

AND I AM A WOMAN - ANGIE MCMAHON

Angie’s lyrics in this song just scream - poweful. It gives you such a sense of self worth and strength and I fall in love with it more and more every time I listen.

DONT DREAM ITS OVER - CROWDED HOUSE

“There’s a battle ahead, many battles are lost but you’ll never see the end of the road while you’re travelling with me” - couldn’t be any more beautiful or relevant right now.

BIRD SOUNDS - DIDIRRI

Bird sounds - one of my favourite sounds in the world. I often get lost in this song have to replay it again and again - always manages to clear my thoughts and ease my mind.

DELETE - DMA’S

DMA’S have this way of perfectly mixing nostalgia with the modern day. This song makes me reminisce - not on anything particular, but it’s always nice to remember the good old days.

I HEARD LOVE IS BLIND - AMY WINEHOUSE

I could listen to her voice all day every day. This is one of my favourite recordings of Amy as it’s basically just her and a guitar. It’s an instant relaxer.

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES - MEG MAC

“Everything is gonna be alright”. Enough said.

MONDAY - MATT CORBY

Another one to melt away your heartstrings. Harmonies are one of my favourite things in the world - and this song has a lot. A true masterpiece to get tangled in.

MAGNOLIA - GANG OF YOUTHS

This is the ultimate song to scream at the top of your lungs in your bedroom - while you’re jumping on your bed. As soon as I hear that intro: instant goosebumps.

MEET ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AIR - PAUL KELLY

This song makes me cry. But in a good way - and sometimes you just need a good cry. But  it also represents hope and puts your mind at ease.
