Live Review: PREMIERE: Sparrows delivers electro-pop at its finest with 'Hide & Seek'

11 March 2020 | 10:04 am | Emma Jones

Sparrows hits the ground running with her first single of the year with another delicious slice of electro-pop in 'Hide & Seek'.

Off the back of a huge twelve months which saw her release a string of singles including total bop 'Over & Out', support Northeast Party HouseSparrows is back today with another bonafide jam that sees her venture further down the pop path than ever before. Titled 'Hide & Seek', it's inspired by a relationship that followed the narrative of the game hide and seek, and featuring a sample of the boy next door to Sparrows' home counting aloud. The result of a collaboration with Rob Amoruso and Gab Strum (Japanese Wallpaper) at an APRA songhub curated by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie), it's electro-pop at its finest and we couldn't be more excited to premiere it exclusively on Purple Sneakers today.

Sparrows said of the new single, "I was feeling defeated after experiencing a dodgy situation, however making this song with Rob and Gab totally restored my faith in working in a team again. Hide & Seek is about closing off on a chapter. I now see things with new eyes thus the creation of our (FLUIR) own record label Rola Door Records. I showed Rob a recording on my phone of a boy playing hide & seek as well as a beat that I had made years a go. His eyes lit up and the next thing I new, we were riffing off on it all. It all came together pretty quickly. I was learning how to produce music and totally inspired by Japanese Wallpaper winning triple j Unearthed 2014 and there I was making a new song with him - I awkwardly told him that too in the session."

With 'Hide & Seek', Sparrows hits the ground running with her first song of the year, and we're very much hoping there's plenty more where this came from. The good news for Sparrows doesn't stop there, with the announcement last month that she, along with partner Sydney artist Fluir (aka Siobhan Krelle), launched their new record label Rola Door Records with an exclusive distribution through Ditto Music.
