Get to Know: Stellie

5 March 2020 | 12:51 pm | Emma Jones

We get to know rising star STELLIE and ask all about how she got started and her brand new single, 'How Do We Look So Good?'

Responsible for some of the lushest songs we've heard in recent times, South Australia's STELLIE is on a one-way ticket to the top at the moment. After breaking through last year with 'Love Me First', she burst onto the scene and quickly picked up steam as one to watch, supporting the likes of Winston SurfshirtLime Cordiale and more as well as being one of the most hyped acts to showcase at BIGSOUND. Now, she's returned with another gloriously romantic stunner and we cannot get enough.

Titled 'How Do We Look So Good?', it's a gritty, grungy but oh-so-pretty romp with fierce bass, twinkling keys and a blooming chorus that swells so beautifully it completely washes over you. Stellie's stunning vocals are once again on full display, effortlessly moving from commanding and assertive to soft and gentle, as she sings about refusing to feel guilty. Marking the start of a new era for the fresh-faced talent, 'How Do We Look So Good?' shines so bright because of how self-assured it is - Stellie has absolutely arrived with this single.

To get to know her a little better before she blows up, we chatted to her recently to find out all about her and her new single. Check it all out below!

Who are you?

My name is Stellie, I’m a singer/songwriter from Adelaide.

I love to sing - my job wouldn’t be too fun if I didn’t. I don’t really think that have any other hobbies outside of music which I guess is pretty boring, but I don’t have much time for anything else and I’m very much okay with that.

How did Stellie come to be?

I have been singing pretty much since I could talk, but Stellie only really came to life just over a year ago. I was always a bit scared of the idea of writing my own music and really pouring my inner thoughts and feelings out for everyone to hear (it still kind of scares me now too). But eventually I decided to put a song up online.

It was something I’d been thinking about for a long time, I was just waiting for it to feel right. The song I released was one that was written on a very old keyboard that lives pretty much at the end of my bed - and that’s really how it all started.

The song was far from perfect, but somehow it started to really connect with people - and then I think I just became addicted to that feeling - because there’s nothing quite like it. Looking back there are always things that I would’ve done differently or could have been improved upon, but I think those flaws and small bumps in the road have definitely helped shaped who Stellie is.

What are we talking, vibes-wise?

I certainly throw this word around a little too much, but I like to keep everything feeling super nostalgic. Old school does it best. Any words, sounds or ideas that make me reminisce are definitely the things that spark ideas for me creatively. I’m not really sure how this idea of ‘nostalgia’ came about, but it’s just what felt the most authentic.

Growing up I was exposed to a lot of different genres and styles of music through my parents. Even now I’ll be listening to music and I’ll hear my mum shout from across the room - “how do you know this song? This song is older than me” The 70s was always an era that struck my attention the most, even down to the fashion. I adore 70s fashion.

Tell us more about your single, 'How Do We Look So Good?'?

How Do We Look So Good is the first single off of my forthcoming EP. For me, it marks a new era of Stellie. One that I think is more sure of what it is and in turn has made me more sure of who I am. Something a little more shiny and exciting. The main idea behind the song is feeling guilty for not really feeling guilty at all - with a slight narcissistic undertone, which came about completely by accident, but I absolutely love it.

What can we expect from you in the months ahead?

So much! It’s going to be a busy few months for me I think. Definitely lots of new music on the way with the release of my debut EP. I’m heading on tour with The Vanns in a couple of weeks too, and I may even have some potential headline shows in the works as well.

Where can we hear more from you?

You can find my music across all streaming platforms as well as triple J Unearthed.
