Live Review: Val Flynn wears his heart on his sleeve in his 'Lover' clip

27 June 2019 | 3:14 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Towards the end of last year, we heard 'Werk 4 It' from Brisbane's VAL FLYNN. He teamed up with Miss Blanks for the commanding track, both artists never missing a beat or breaking a sweat on the hefty club anthem.

Well baby, he's back and bigger than ever on his first track of the year, 'Lover', and taking things up a notch, he's delivered a cinematic clip to accompany it.

Producer by Brisbane rapper JesswarVal Flynn is a force to be reckoned with on 'Lover', spitting a relentless flow that elevates the energy of the dancehall inspired, afrobeat. He's struck balanced gold on this one, his riddim-infused vocal emanating nothing but self-assurance and in the process, serving us a powerful slice of pop.

The clip, shot and directed by David Fischer, shows Val taking us through the streets of Melbourne, having fun, getting busy and giving us so much to remember in the process.

The heart-shaped fur jacket he wears throughout is central in embodying the fun, playful nature of his lyricism, and you can see throughout that Val is totally in his element. Of the track, Val said:

“I created my new track ‘lover’ whilst in New York earlier this year with my good friend and music-peer Jesswar. Jesswar and I (and a few other friends) got LIT one night in Manhattan and then had the wildest kick on/jam out at their apartment in Brooklyn. I created ‘Lover’ for all the love makers and party cravers!”

Although he only debuted in early 2018, Val Flynn has already established himself as a pop force to be reckoned with. Whether he's supporting artists like Charli XCX or Jessica Mauboy or doing his thing on stage, there's a beautifully self-realised atmosphere surrounding everything Val does, and we're on the edge of our seats waiting to see what's next from him.
