Live Review: Wave Racer returns with 'AUTO', his first original track in four years

28 June 2019 | 9:15 am | Caitlin Medcalf

After taking a two and a half year break, Wave Racer makes his triumphant return today with 'AUTO', a saccharine-sweet pop bop.

After updating his profile picture this week and posting a mysterious phone number, fans have been eagerly speculating that this might mean the long-awaited return of WAVE RACER. Fast establishing himself as an innovative producer creating sounds that felt way beyond their years, he took a break for two and a half years. His last release was a remix he did for Tkay Maidza's 'Carry On', and before that, was 2015's Flash Drive EP, so on the original release front, it's been four years.

It's been a while between drinks for him, but today, he's making his triumphant return with 'AUTO', reminding us of everything we'd come to love about Wave Racer and the beautiful world of sound he's previously invited us into.

His sound has been largely compared to that of PC Music and the world crafted by the label's head A.G. Cook, but here in Australia, he was operating mostly in a league of his own. Since taking a break, Australia's been having a huge club music moment, largely due to the rise of Nina Las Vegas' NLV Records crew.

He's been sorely missed on the club circuit, but 'AUTO' marks a regeneration of sorts for the Melbourne artist, marking the start of what's hopefully set to be a hectic few months from him.

'AUTO' is saccharine sweet and totally fierce. The manipulated vocal line provides bubbly commentary atop the warm instrumental, a guitar solo taking the lead in the vocal breaks. The choppy instrumental comes across as complex, giving off a meticulous air about it that settles neatly as the track progresses.

There's been murmurs around circles for years speculating about what Wave Racer's been up to, and 'AUTO' confirms that taking his time has been absolutely worth the wait.
