Jazz Party's five local picks to see at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival

30 May 2019 | 1:47 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

With the Melbourne International Jazz Festival kicking off tomorrow, one scroll through the program shows that jazz is alive, well and thriving here in Australia. The program boasts a stellar number of Aussie and international acts who will be taking to the stage, as well as a few retrospective celebrations and a whole bunch of exhibitions.

One of the venue's taking part in the MIJF programming is the Melbourne Museum. Their Nocturnal program sees various different programmers curating nights surrounding various aspects of music, arts and culture. Friday, June 7 is the night they'll be hosting their MIJF program, kicking off with a talk from Don Was, who will be in the country for the first time to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records. Best of all? It's free! Kicking off from 6PM, the talk will go to 7PM which is when the music begins.

MM's Nocturnal showcase will see Horns of LeroyTanya George, special guests and Jazz Party taking to the stage.

Jazz Party are led by local legends Darcy McNulty and Loretta Miller, both former members of Clairy Browne & The Bangin Rackettes. Their works and recordings are of inimitable raucousness, their live energy emanating through harping horns, frantic keys and as much soul as they can pack in. They've taken their live show to the likes of Golden PlainsNew Years Evie and WOMAD over the years.

To celebrate such a huge program, Jazz Party have put together their top picks for the MIJF for us. Whether you're a newbie to the genre or a long-time lover of jazz, these picks are a must-see. Take a read.
