Five tracks that have inspired the First Beige sound

16 April 2019 | 8:59 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Brissy six-piece FIRST BEIGE are on a roll. The formidable group have been doing the rounds supporting the likes of Harvey Sutherland and Sweater Curse, and will very aptly be supporting Melbourne's Mildlife on the Brisbane leg of their national tour this April.

Building a quick and solid reputation for their tight live performance, First Beige capture their sound live with an array of synths, smooth vocal hooks and a hell of a lot of jazz influence - think flutes and glistening strings. Their latest single 'Details' takes after its namesake. The beauty of their sound is captured in its totality on the new track, the little nuances on show being the most imperative.

With the track being entirely recorded and mixed by vocalist/synth player David Versace, he knew exactly what to look for in the recordings and how best to capture the group's sound. 'Details' is a testament to the group's expert ability to feed off one another, building jazzy, soulful textures with a touch of disco.

The track features vocals from Pink Matter's Kerry Raywood and strings from singer David Versace's mother.

David Versace explains that ‘Details’ is about "the importance of one’s perspective on their life. Sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in thinking about your lifetime as a whole rather than a path. It’s about accepting that everyone’s going to have a different way they want to live their life so do what want to do and stand tall".

To celebrate the track's release, and to dive a little deeper into the context of the group, David's shared five tracks with us that have inspired the First Beige sound. Featuring an array of cuts spanning from electronic mastermind Flying Lotus to the legendary Jai Paul, take a listen below and be sure to catch them at one of their upcoming shows (dates below).

Jai Paul - Genevieve

For me personally this song was one of the biggest reasons I got into writing music, something about Jai Paul's music just sticks to me. I just love how it’s so his own thing, there’s nothing I’ve ever found that is like it. His tones on the guitar sound like they are not even from this world and he compliments it so nicely with that harsh 80’s gated reverb sound on the vocals, such an inspo to me.

Jordan Rakei - Talk to Me

Such a creative song! The groove and chords work so nicely and I’ve always been such a fan of how Jordan phrases his lyrics, really unique.

Flying Lotus - Getting There (Feat. Niki Randa)

All about this track, always been such a fan of Flylo’s production and how he incorporates a lot of his auntie (Alice Coltrane’s) sounds into his own work, big fan of any sparkly chime tones so this hits the nail right on the head.

Dorothy Ashby - Games

Such a vibe, can listen to this song any time of day and always feel good.

Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange - Big Up

This goes HARD! Such a fan of the way Ziggy grooves, goes so well with all the instrumentation on the record. I find it has helped so much in developing my rhythm and thinking a bit more outside the box while writing grooves.
