Live Review: Missed Calls: Basenji & Erthlings, Retiree, LEISURE & more

24 April 2019 | 4:02 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

If you haven’t got the memo yet, we at Purple Sneakers love new music. Each week, we’re graced with a tonne of new releases, and sometimes, it’s a little hard for us to keep up. Which is why we’re answering some of our missed calls and passing the line over to you. Below is a stellar bunch of new music that you might have missed over the last week.

Retiree - Mystery Bay (Club Mix)

Earlier in the month, RETIREE put out a rework of their track 'Mystery Bay' off their debut record, House Or Home. The rework is a friendly re-recording of the original that reflects their live arrangement of the track. The rework brings a hard-hitting driving force to the track, whilst retaining all of the magic of the original.

They've brought the rework to life in its rightful context on a new live video recording. Retiree took to the Northcote Social Club stage on the Melbourne leg of their album tour, which is where this colourful live clip was filmed.

They're in their element in this clip, a purple glow washing over their full live band as they deliver the track in its intimately rightful place. Complete with their signature sax, live backing vocals and one hell of a bassline, see Retiree doing what they do best for one hell of a performance.

Basenji - Perfect Blue (Feat. Erthlings)

Hot off the back of his slot supporting Mallrat across the country on her sold out tour, BASENJI's back and doing what he does best. He's teamed up with fellow Future Classic labelmates Erthlings to deliver this crystal clear cut in 'Perfect Blue'.

Basenji's track record of working with pop artists is nothing short of stellar. He's a versatile producer in that he can write a pop song, he can write an electronic banger, and he can write a pop song that is an electronic banger. 'Perfect Blue' sees him crafting crystalline synth lines underneath the saccharine sweet vocals of the Erthlings girls.

It's orchestral electronica at its best, with layers upon layers building as the song progresses to the delicate chorus which later eventuates into a booming verse, pushed forth by the narrative-nature of Erthlings' lyrics.

Collaboration continually brings the best out of Basenji, and 'Perfect Blue' has exposed us to a totally new side to him as a producer.

It's crazy to me that 'Petty Love' is the debut from VARIATIONS OF LIGHT. The hip-hop trio put out their debut record Lunar Beautific less than a week ago, and 'Petty Love' is the lead single from it, with vocals from Melanie Rutherford. The track touches on how social media can affect our relationships with those around us, something I'm sure many are familiar with.

They've just dropped a clip to accompany the single, and keeping in stead with the wavy nature of the track, it's a damn trip. Zona Mind created the clip, whilst Variations of Light vocalist Nelson Dialect did the storyboard. Taking inspiration from VHS hand-drawn cartoons and 70's psychedelia clips, the clip very accurately delivers the pace and flow of the track in visual form.

LEISURE - On My Mind

It wasn't long ago that we chatted with Jaden of New Zealand five-piece LEISURE. When we touched base, we chatted about the direction their new record is headed in, him saying "The record is more definitely dynamic than the last, though is still very much LEISURE."

They've come through with the goods, announcing that their new record TWISTER will be out everywhere on Friday, July 26, and to celebrate, they've not only gone and announced their first nationwide Australian tour, but they've gone and given us another taste of the record too.

'On My Mind' is about “dealing with an intense magnetism to a significant other, giving in to the power that takes hold”. And in true LEISURE fashion, the Kiwi collective bring the funk. Electric guitars are aplenty on this one, delving closer to electronic/dance territory than rock. With a dub inspired melody and one hell of a bassline, I dare you not to dance to this one.
