PS Selected: Moxie, Negative Gemini, Soda Plains & more
Welcome back to our weekly segment where we pluck the best mixes from all over the web and the world, bundle ’em together and call it PS Selected. Whether it was whipped up last week or last year, if it’s worth listening to it’s bound to be featured as Holly O’Neill takes you through the hours and hours of quality mixes uploaded across the net by big and small selectors alike.
This week we’re celebrating the power of mixes to unite a scene, or to form something entirely new from existing ones. Whether it’s through the genre pastiche of selections by MISTERVACATION, NEGATIVE GEMINI and SODA PLAINS, or highlighting the best of just one in mixes by KENTA204 and MOXIE the mixes become larger than the sum of their parts by elevating each track by surrounding it with new associations.
Producer Negative Gemini always packs her tunes with shoegazey electronica, hazy techno inspirations and wistful vocals, and her DJ tastes are no different. In her mix for NTS she blends speedy drums with slow moving melody below, lo fi synth work, vaporwave and Fiona Apple. Hit play for an hour of Negative Gemini exploring her own sound, defined by woozy dance tunes that’ll make you feel everything.
In his recent trip to Sydney, Melbourne club fiend Kenta204 stopped by Sidechains on FBi Radio for a guest mix, and it’s a doozy. Packed full of Soundcloud wave dance tunes, in half an hour he weaves jersey bounce into warped trap and EDM leaning club. PC Music, Fractal Fantasy, NLV Records; all the big names all over this mix, and if you like what you hear be sure to check him out supporting Ninajirachi on the Melbourne leg of her Aus tour!.
In her mix for the Fader, Brooklyn DJ Mistervacation proves why she’s become one of the hottest names in the New York club scene. With a taste for bitchy house, bounding jersey + vogue and dembow rhythms, it’s no question why she’s also gotten cosigns from Solange and Afropunk Festival. In forty five minutes she throws down a set of beat driven club blended with femme pop, and features not one but TWO Evanescence remixes. Hero.
NTS Radio’s own DJ Moxie can’t seem to get enough of the land down under. She’s always had a strong connection to our local underground scene and is one of a growing number of international names properly paying attention to our strong home grown house and techno talent. In this mix for her show she spins only the best tracks from our backyard sourced on her recent Aus tour, expect some dreamy house, acid heaters and oddball genre redefiners.
London based producer and tastemaker Soda Plains is somewhat of a club connoisseur. Through his own releases which have lead to composing for high fashion shows and art collaborations, he’s developed a taste for mutated club sounds primed to disorient and delight. His latest mix for Dummy proves all he’s learnt, as he weaves disparate melodies and intimidating percussion with his own work to create a forty five minute club symphony.
