Artists to Watch in 2019: Erthlings

27 December 2018 | 2:55 pm | Max Lewis

Calling it now: 2019 is gonna be the year of ERTHLINGS. The all-girl, all-teen indie-rock quartet have made a huge impact with just two songs under their belt, and with all eyes and ears on them, the future is certainly looking bright.

Erthlings have been making tunes since meeting at an inner-city music school when they were 9. Their debut track 'Bridges' was released when they were just 16, though you wouldn't think that with how mature and effortless it all sounds. It exudes a throwback yet forward-thinking sound, one that's instantly timeless and eternally stuck in your head. Especially noteworthy is the wide and spacey sound, thanks in part to some stellar production but also lead singer Issy's synethesia, a neurological condition that lets her associate colours with music.

The importance of an all-girl indie-rock band making it big at 16 cannot be understated. In a time where the representation of non cis-male artists in Australia's music scene still needs improvement, Erthlings shows budding female musicians that they can get signed, play on big lineups, and get tracks on the radio. Erthlings are really, really good at what they do, and I have a feeling they are absolutely going to smash 2019.
