PS Selected: Strict Face, SPORTS, Channel Tres & more

17 November 2018 | 11:25 am | Holly O'Neill

Bringing together all the best mixes from our favourite DJs and musos specially selected just for you, PS Selected has your weekend soundtrack sorted.

As much as we love producers, vocalists and bands at Purple Sneakers, we've been meaning to give a bit of extra love to the DJs. The chameleons curating all their taste and experience to an ever changing audience while staying true to their creative core. Musos that define themselves by other artist's (and sometimes their own) works and piece them together in a way that only they can, curating sounds to speak to a whole new experience. As broad as there are genres of music there are DJs, blending little bits of everything together to create something totally unheard of out of soundcloud uploads and crate dug deep cuts.

Selection to create something new is what we're celebrating with this new series PS Selected, as we bring our favourite mixes from our favourite DJs and producers together to launch you into the week ahead and get you moving. This week we've got the goods from STRICT FACE, SPORTS + EDDY DIAMOND, XZAVIER STONE, TRANTER and CHANNEL TRES, all approaching DJing from their own experiences and shaping something brand new and entirely themselves.

Lets kick it all off with a new mix series from SPORTS via Sittin Pretty, a Sydney loving platform run by our own Eddy Diamond. Both DJs give an hour of their best, with SPORTS channeling high energy vintage sounds and Eddy Diamond blending languid polyrhythms with ease. Sure the series may be called Chair Exercise, but this tempo bending experience of old school techno, upbeat house and loose garage will have you jumping out of your seat.

With the fall of Radar Radio earlier this year (RIP) came the rise of Strict Face's monthly mixtape drop 1292AM, now transmitting the international connects and genre pastiche his radio show was known for direct to the web. Majorly influenced by the British music underground, expect touches of grime, future dancehall, UK funky and maximal industrial sounds. Featuring an unreleased tune or twelve from his producer pals all around the world and, as he says himself, "more drums than you could shake a stick at", there's plenty to get excited about in this installment of 1292AM.

No one has a better grip on hyper-colour club, future facing minimalism and classic RnB sentiment like producer and Fractal Fantasy signee Xzavier Stone. Across his mix for The Astral Plane he weaves the work of modern contemporaries like Iglooghost, SOPHIE and label mates Zora Jones and Sinjin Hawke, with rap and RnB legends like Mariah Carey, Lil Uzi Vert and Playboy Carti. This sonic rollercoaster is basically Xzavier Stone's hour long mission statement, bringing all of his musical influences together for an oddly cohesive thrill ride.

Producer and vocalist Channel Tres is not a DJ, but for i-D he dabbles. In his very first mix he lends his selective ear to some funky rnb, disco, old school house, lowkey rap and few of his own bangers to deliver an hour of feel good grooves. You can hear all of these influences across his debut self titled EP, that coincidently he's touring around Aus right now. With only a few stops left peep if you're close enough to be able to take in his four to the floor rap and slick choreography IRL here.

Melbourne's own Tranter takes us on a journey through every nook and cranny of the club landscape in his mix for Switch on FBi Radio. After his time in the scene for almost a decade he's seen his fair share of club trends and internet micro-genres come and go, and there's a little bit of everything across his selections. Baile funk edits are blended with cheery house and speed rap melds into goofy soundcloud deepcuts, as long as it's fun it's getting spun in a mix where genre conventions are totally out the window.
