Live Review: Ceci G shines through on ‘OMG’

25 November 2018 | 6:19 pm | Michael Stratford Hutch

CECI G has returned with the follow-up to her debut single ‘Mala Fruta’ with the exquisite ‘OMG,’ another cut from the “dirtypop” solo project. The track is co-produced with Nate Donmoyer, a former member of Passion Pit who has collaborated with the likes of Spank Rock, Brandon Flowers, and Major Lazer. Ceci G got her start as one half of industrial pop duo Crater before playing synth for Charli XCX’s touring band (with Banoffee), and DJing the now-infamous Pop 2 and 1999 parties across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in November 2018.

The project intermingles elements of glitch pop, the culture of Los Angeles where she lives now, and her Paraguayan and Mexican roots. These distinct threads of sound, place and identity come together seamlessly on ‘OMG,’ a sunshower-like bop where light and dark intermingle to make something uncanny, and damn ear-catching. Radiant synth swells, bubbling FX, and rolling percussion all buoy along Ceci’s bittersweet vocals, throwing lines such as “Chin up little buttercup, don’t let money fuck you up.” The track as a whole is hook-laden, balanced yet dense with melodic and rhythmic ideas, with plenty of hidden details to discover with more listens.

It’s especially refreshing to hear an artist articulate their concerns about the music industry (and that of entertainment more broadly) in such a novel manner - Ceci G is clearly no novice with regards to navigating its homogeneity with grace and good humour.

Even with only two tracks under the project's belt, it honestly feels as though Ceci G is an artist that dodges the vacuity of the popstar complex, and injects something more vital, and genuinely enjoyable, into the mix.
