Live Review: Sydney’s Violet welcomes you to her suburban tragedy in ‘BOXES/HOUSES’

20 August 2018 | 5:54 pm | Staff Writer

Under the VIOLET moniker Sydney based musician Jessica Meier creates eerie and powerful pop music - think Sevdaliza meets Florence + The Machine.

Her latest offering ‘BOXES/HOUSES’ explores the terrifying realities of a mundane suburban life, with each verse a dark commentary on modern life. Underpinned by a simple and rhythmic vocal loop, Violet and producer Alex Middleton do an impeccable job of building textures and tension throughout the track, which is sure to leave you feeling something.

Violet collaborated with Sydney film-maker Jessica Vincenza, on the equally haunting video which was shot in Lithgow with a cast of family and friends. Taking inspiration from the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch, the video slowly weaves through suburbia, following Violet as she observes people’s lives through the frames of their windows.

To celebrate the release of ‘BOXES/HOUSES’ Violet will be curating an exhibition later this month, featuring artwork by a host of friends and special performances by Purple Sneakers DJ Eddy Diamond and Violet herself.

Catch Violet launching ‘BOXES/HOUSES’ on the 31st of August Upstairs at The Lord Gladstone - tickets are $5 on the door.
