Live Review: Set Mo raise the bar once again with 'Wish You Were Here'

13 August 2018 | 8:05 am | Jackson Langford

Set Mo's latest offering, 'Wish You Were Here', is a hark back to the soaring electronic choruses the duo are known for, but with a shiny new look.

SET MO have set themselves a lot of challenges in 2018. By taking on the monster task of releasing one single per month throughout the year, a plethora of things can go wrong. There's the pressure to stick to this deadline they've set themselves, and there's the added pressure of making sure creativity is not compromised in order just to reach that one-song-per-month quota.

But, naturally, the Sydney duo have risen to the challenge time and time again, keeping every song interesting and remarkably different from the one that came before it. Their latest offering, 'Wish You Were Here', is a hark back to the soaring electronic choruses the duo are known for, but with a shiny new look. Co-written with Julian Hamilton of The Presets and with delectable, silky vocals from J. Blynn, 'Wish You Were Here' sees Set Mo playing to their strengths.

Their ability to make feather-light electronic music that still bangs and hits where it needs to is one they've mastered, and it's refreshing to see it hasn't been lost in this year's experiment. Of the song, the duo say, "Writing with Julian was quite special for us."

"We grew up listening to and loving The Presets so to then be in the studio writing with Julian was pretty surreal. We explored the concept of realising a goal and then missing having that special person there to share it with.”

Honing in on their knack for creating euphoric, sun-drenched tunes that build and build until they positively soar, Set Mo shine as bright as ever on 'Wish You Were Here'. Harnessing the yearning that's at the core of the lyrics, their masterful songwriting has come in handy to create an emotional experience listening to the song, as J. Blynn's vocals only amplify this even more. With one half of Set MoStu Turner, on backing vocals, it's clear Set Mo's year-long challenge has them continually raising the bar over and over again. We can't wait to see what they do next month!
