Live Review: PREMIERE: Aneko James proves he's bound for big things with debut, 'rewind/automatic'

15 August 2018 | 3:00 pm | Emma Jones

Intricate, unpredictable, enthralling. These are the words that best describe the debut single from Sydney artist, ANEKO JAMES. Having cut his teeth in bands over the past few years, Aneko James today unveils his new project with the richly textured and meticulous 'rewind/automatic'.

Combining electronic textures with lush organic instrumentation and intricate beats, James' 'rewind/automatic' is a sonic sprawl that immerses you into his world. Inspired by the likes of CARIBOUFRANK OCEAN and THOM YORKEAneko James seamlessly shifts between moments of affirming clarity and disorienting confusion, creating an entire experience for the listener as he lets you in.

Speaking on his new single, Aneko James said, "It's an inner dialogue about when you can’t see eye to eye with someone and getting really wound up and frustrated by it.. then thinking.. fuck it, slow down, relax and remember what made you love them in the first place." A dynamic exploration of tension and release, Aneko James effortlessly shifts between frustration and letting go and through his precise production, he takes you along for the ride.
