Live Review: PREMIERE: Benson takes The Wombats to the club with new 'Cheetah Tongue' remix

27 July 2018 | 10:02 am | Emma Jones

After a triumphant return to their home-away-from-home, Australia this week, including a standout set at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASSTHE WOMBATS are back in our ears today... but perhaps not in the way you'd first expect. Teaming up with rising producer and all-round legend BENSON, they've tapped him to remix their tune, 'Cheetah Tongue', and in classic Benson fashion, he's plunged it straight to the depths of the club.

Keeping lead singer Matthew Murphy's voice in tact, Benson builds a deep house beat around the vocals, complete with heaving bass, piercing synth jabs and just enough groove that it's guaranteed to make you move. Straddling the perfect balance between festival and club-oriented sounds, this remix maintains the liberating euphoria in the original and gives it new life where guitars are out but heavy bass and house beats reign supreme.

Having celebrated one of his biggest year's yet and just wrapping up his own tour, it's been an exciting few months for Benson. Of the new remix, he said, “It’s been a staple in my sets for my recent Australian tour. I don’t think people really see it coming until it’s too late! Big vibe!!!”

He continued, “I’m a massive Wombats fan, I’ve seen them play countless times at a bunch of different festivals and shows here in Australia. When the opportunity came up to remix them, I was blown away and couldn’t say no. I wanted to make a driving club version that paid homage to the original, I wanted people to be able to sing the lyrics out loud but also still lose their shit when that bad boy drops!”

An undeniable jam that's come from an unlikely but perfectly fitting pairing, Benson's remix of The Wombats' 'Cheetah Tongue' is sure to get you feeling very, very good today. Turn it up loud!

The Wombats' 'Cheetah Tongue' (Benson Remix) is out now via Warner Music. Buy/stream here.
