Live Review: PREMIERE: Passerine leave us with a double bang with 'Numb' & 'It Was You'

If all good things do indeed come to an end, then Passerine have made sure their end is as sparkling and as explosive as the rest of their five-year run.

All good things truly do come to an end. After five years, Melbourne trio PASSERINE have decided to call it a day and wrap up the project. Since they burst onto the scene with their debut single, 'Ready To Begin', Phoebe, Alex and Ben have injected everything they create with glistening synths, rapid-fire beats and a deep, instilled soulfulness that only they could. As their final goodbye, Passerine have given us a double A-side in 'Numb' and 'It Was You.'

The best thing about both of these tracks is that they exemplify everything Passerine were about in the space of six minutes, and in different ways. 'Numb' booms and roars when it needs to, but Phoebe's rich vocals help bring it back so it doesn't feel overwhelming. It also shows the group leaving no moment left un-milked, with each second packed with layers that shine brighter and brighter with each re-listen.

'It Was You' is a little darker, a little funkier and is the perfect counterpart to 'Numb.' Phoebe's voice, while still soulful, is cemented with a sternness that holds its own against the beautiful whirlwind of synths, notes and beats whooshing around it. It's like a perfectly curated maelstrom, with each chime given as much attention and spotlight as the one before it.

If all good things do indeed come to an end, then Passerine have made sure their end is as sparkling and as explosive as the rest of their five-year run. Their last hurrah in 'Numb' and 'It Was You' is all the proof that you need that this trio kept it pushing the whole way through, and they will be sorely missed.
