Live Review: Channel Tres blurs the lines between minimal house and rap with 'Jet Black'

13 July 2018 | 1:01 pm | Max Lewis

LA artist Channel Tres is back with another taste of his upcoming EP in the form of 'Jet Black', a fascinating blend of Detroit house and West-Coast rap.

There's a lot happening for LA artist CHANNEL TRES, and we couldn't be more excited. He's making his Australian debut with headlining shows in November, as well as his festival debut at Spilt Milk. As if that wasn't enough, he's dropping his self-titled EP on the 27th of July. Sill not satisfied? He's given us another taste of his EP with 'Jet Black', brooding mix of throbbing minimal house with silky smooth rap.

Channel Tres burst on the scene with 'Controller' back in April, captivating us immediately with his stark blend of Detroit house and West Coast rap. Winning praise from countless publications and scoring the #1 position on Spotify's Viral Chart in Australia, 'Controller' left us wanting more. With 'Jet Black' he's not only delivered a deserving followup, but made us even more keen for his EP at the end of July.

An acid-y modular synth loop and thick percussion set the scene as Channel Tres' baritone spoken-word booms, instantly grounding and captivating your attention. The track builds with additional layers of samples and vocal grabs, the vibe a little closer to the hip-hop side than it's predecessor. This being said, gritty minimal house is still at the core of 'Jet Black', and its combination with Tres' catchy lyrical prowess is fascinating and irresistible.
