Get to know All My Friends ahead of #PS12
Although here at Purple Sneakers, we definitely do love new and emerging music, there is something about classic indie-dance and electro from about 10 or more years ago that will always have a soft spot in our hearts, which is why local Sydney clubnight ALL MY FRIENDS has a special place in our hearts as well.
Having stated back in 2010, stopping in 2013 then back up and running in 2016, All My Friends is like a time capsule of all that was brilliant about classic indie-dance around the time it first started, as well as throwing in some new music as well. Now spread across Sydney, the Gold Coast and Tokyo, it’s a much-loved night that harks back to a golden era of dance music, and is also just a damn good party.
Run by friends Josh Kelly, Tim Poulton and Shota Adam, Kelly and Poulton coincidentally met at a Purple Sneakers night at the Abercrombie and bonded over their shared passion for music, and the rest is history. We consider them basically family at this stage, which is why it only makes sense to have All My Friends DJs on board to help us celebrate turning twelve years old. Before our party kicks off on June 16, we got to know Josh Kelly a little more. Check it all out below and nab your tickets to Purple Sneakers Twelfth Birthday to catch him alongside DRO CAREY, RAINBOW CHAN, THANDI PHOENIX, ANNIE BASS, ALTA, LOVE DELUXE and loads more.
Tell us a bit about All My Friends – how long have you been running and who is involved?
All My Friends is a series of indie/indie-dance parties currently held in Sydney, the Gold Coast and Tokyo. I started throwing parties under the AMF name back in 2010 at my local bowling club. We threw regular parties around Sydney for a couple of years until 2013 when we took a little hiatus.
In 2016 Tim Poulton moved to Tokyo and started up AMF Tokyo with good friend Shota Adam. AMF Tokyo runs out of a rad little bar in Shibuya called Beat Cafe which is owned by a legend named Katoman. If you are ever in Tokyo make sure you go and check it out. In November 2016 I relaunched AMF in Sydney and started throwing monthly parties at Newtown’s den of debauchery Tokyo Sing Song. Earlier this year we launched our new weekly Sydney party at Wayward’s at The Bank Hotel Newtown and the latest edition to the family AMF Gold Coast which occurs monthly at The Rattle Snake Motel in Coolangatta.
All three parties offer the best in new and classic indie & indie-dance with the best local, national and international DJ’s around.
How did you all meet, and why did you start All My Friends?
I actually met Tim Poulton at Purple Sneakers at The Abercrombie Hotel (r.i.p). Tim was running the parties there at the time. I’m pretty sure I spent almost every Friday between the ages of 18-21 at Sneakers at the Abercrombie. Good times haha. Tim met Shota when he was living in Tokyo. I had the pleasure of meeting Shota (in person) for the first time earlier this year when I was on holidays in Japan. The guy is an absolute legend who has an impeccable taste in music.
When I first started AMF it was more just to have a place where friends could hang out and listen to good music together. When we relaunched in 2016 it was more out of necessity. There was no indie club nights at the time and there hadn’t been any for several years and i thought that it was a void that needed to be filled.
What are five songs that define what All My Friends is about?
Echoes – The Rapture
Whenever people ask me what AMF is all about I play them this song. It perfectly encapsulates the indie-dance vibe.
Over and Over – Hot Chip
Skeleton Boy – Friendly Fires
Skeleton Boy is an absolute floor filler. There could be not a soul on the dance floor but by the time this song finishes the room will be full of people jumping around singing and dancing like maniacs.
Deceptacon (DFA Remix) – Le Tigre
This song makes you want to strut! Doesn’t matter if you are in the office, at home, at the super market or at the club when this song comes on you’re getting your best Kate Moss on and you’re strutting baby!
We Were Lovers – Buzz Kull
As much as we love the older stuff at AMF we are also all about what’s new. This song is a perfect example of that great song from a great Sydney band!
You now operate out of three locations, how has that been creating communities of friends across the country and around the world in Tokyo?
It’s been awesome. I couldn’t have ever imagined that we would be throwing parties in other cities let alone internationally. It’s great seeing what the other guys are doing and having our friends from the other parties play when they are in town.
What advice would you give your twelve year old self?
Ask Melissa Sampson out on a date haha!
What can we expect from your set at #PS12?
An eclectic mix of new and classic indie/indie-dance tracks and maybe a couple from LCD Soundsystem.
