Live Review: G Flip is defiant on 'Killing My Time'

21 May 2018 | 8:15 am | Max Lewis

Melbourne singer-songwriter and producer G Flip has hit two for two with 'Killing My Time', a defiantly catchy indie-pop jam.

I've always got a soft spot for bedroom pop, and G FLIP's latest single 'Killing My Time' is no different. It's the kind of hook filled, tightly packed electro-pop tune you'd expect to come out of months in a studio; but it's all the magic of one Melbourne singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer.

Cutting her teeth as a touring drummer in her early 20s, G Flip spent 2017 locked in the studio mastering the art of solo songwriting. The first fruit of her labour was 'About You' in February: a brooding indie-pop track bursting at the seams with sounds and instruments all recorded in her bedroom studio. The track earned her practically instant accolades from the likes of Pitchfork and Triple J, and topped Spotify's viral charts for that month.

Less brooding and heavy than her debut, 'Killing My Time' is still the kind of densely crafted bop we expect from G Flip. On the surface, it's a catchy and simplistic track, but her past as a drummer shines through with the booming percussive hits that drive the action. G Flip says the track is based around "around a girl who kept distracting me from making music"so much so she had to break up with her. This feeling is perfectly evoked with the repeated titular hook, proving G Flip has the chops to pack a deeper punch with her tightly crafted pop.

'Killing My Time' has far less layers than her debut, yet G Flip manages to make it sound just as thick thanks to some truly stellar production. She's a one-of-a-kind producer that you should definitely be keeping an eye on. In the meantime, she's taking her bedroom pop to the stage, hitting up Splendour in the Grass and two sideshows in Sydney (supporting Superorganism) and Melbourne (supporting Pale Waves).
